Found-object sculptor and brother-in-law Lance Arnold scored a book of breathtaking woodblock prints at the “put ‘n take” portion of his local landfill, and very kindly sent it to me.

Each page offers a print more gorgeous than the last. As I oohed and aahed, I could barely wait to try to replicate some of what I saw.
While the results and feel of a woodblock print are quite different from those of a watercolor painting, I was inspired to try my hand at imitating Rakusan’s day lilies with a black bird.

I decided to put my own stink on my rendition by substituting the black bird with a belted kingfisher.
