When I discovered Chinese Brush Painting, sometimes referred to as Chinese watercolor, I was immediately obsessed. It’s a close cousin to sumi-e. The style that I practice blends traditional Eastern with Western impressionism. Trained in traditional methods, I use “rice” papers, and try to imitate as best I can the classic strokes and styles of the Lingnan School.
More recently, I was mesmerized by a random article in Financial Times about Henri Roché handmade pastels. Their story and the intense tones of the pictured pastel sticks started me on a quest to learn this vibrant medium. Now, I’m hooked!
