Painting on Silk

For a change of pace, we experimented with painting on silk rounds this week in class. First we applied a “resist” liquid to outline our subjects, using patterns that helped us visualize our subject matter and the outlines that comprise them.

After the resist had dried, we filled in the open areas with our regular Marie’s Chinese watercolors. Some of us also added a wash to the backgrounds, which really made the resisted areas pop.

I’d like to do some more tinkering, to see if I can draw thinner resist lines and better control where the paint goes.

Sunflower and bees, with bonus kitty in the shot.
