The How-To’s

I was recently asked to demo a painting at a show in which I was going to be exhibiting. Painting for an audience is something I don’t think I’m cut out for. But several people have asked about the processes, so I’ve created a couple of amateurish videos of a simple koi painting that might be helpful.

Having been trained in traditional methods, I grind my own ink. The first video demonstrates that. Next comes sketching the outlines and features of the koi, including the scales, gills, and fins. Next is adding color, then more details. Lastly, when I’m happy with a painting, I mount it onto another sheet and add my “chop,” which is my name spelled phonetically.

Grinding the ink.
Outlining and some details.
Adding color.
Color details for gills and scales.
Final step is to add my chop (signature).
