Using Social Media for Input

As with many things, getting a second or third opinion on a painting can be beneficial. I worried that the white mark on a belted kingfisher’s forehead would be distracting. So I posted a photo of my painting on an Asian watercolor group page on Facebook to ask for advice on how to deal with it.

The input ranged from “leave it alone” to try softening it with muted colors or fine brush strokes. Based on the advice of a watercolor teacher whose work I respect, I chose to leave it alone.

    All I know is that the detail as the little kingfisher is remarkably… Detailed! Wow! And, it wouldn’t be a kingfisher without the little white dot, right? Your wisteria is second only to your sunflowers! Beautiful! 😊

    Good decision! All creatures may have distinctive markings…maybe it’s a scar from wrestling too large a fish? Maybe he flew into a prickly patch? Or did a tough old wisteria branch poke him near the eye? Tells a story.
